为此,高天的上主命令我们建立友谊;

Award to Sister Janet Carroll MM August 12, 2017
Tom McGuire, USCCB Chair
We are here tonight to award Sister Janet Carroll, a Maryknoll Sister, the Matteo Ricci Award. This award reflects the way of Matteo Ricci, S.J.- Missionary to China in the 16th Century, especially his treatise On Friendship- a great intercultural achievement. In passage 16 of On Friendship, Ricci writes:
“Each person cannot fully complete every task,
for which reason the Lord on High commanded
that there be friendship
in order that we might render aid to one another.
If this Way were eradicated from the world,
humankind would surely disintegrate into ruin.”
Sr.Janet Carroll, a missionary disciple for 65 years, has exemplified the meaning of this passage. She spent time in formation, doing graduate studies, mission ministry in Taiwan, and represented the Vatican at the United Nations. For this service she was awarded the papal honor: Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal. She continues today to be an active Maryknoll missionary disciple engaged with Chinese friends.
Characteristic of all her mission work is the effort to integrate her encounter and friendship with Jesus Christ with her knowledge of human affairs. She is a woman of prayer and contemplation and work, recognizing that friendship enables human beings to “render aid to one another”.
I appreciate another aspect of her friendship, mentioned in passage 82 of On Friendship by Matteo Ricci:
The friend who flatters is no friend, but merely a thief who steals that name and usurps it. Sister Janet tells it as she sees it.
Sister Lina RONG, a Missionary of Holy Hope, of Xian Xian Diocese in Hebei Province, speaking of the needs of the Catholic Church in China today, wrote:
"I think in our time, we need people who can go beyond themselves,to build bridges among people with different faith traditions, different ways of life, different opinions on political issues,to let go one's sense of security in a certain "belief" and "truth,”to admit that my view is limited; then to listen and to appreciate the other. We can live in peace even (if) we are different in every way.”
Sister Janet has encouraged and worked to set up ways to help people build bridges among people of different faith traditions and ways of life. She has sought to make ways of living in peace among all people, but especially people of the Church in China and the Church in the United States.
Tonight we award Sister Janet for all of her faithful work as a missionary disciple; but especially her prophetic vision that guided her and friends, from a number of other Catholic religious communities, with historic missions in China, to found the U. S. Catholic China Her knowledge of Chinese language, culture and history joined with her education in international relations created a dynamic USCCB, which has provided strong initiatives and programs for educating people in the United States and building bridges of friendship between people in the Church in China and in the United States. Her vision included ecumenical outreach and friendships with those of many other Christian denominations. She is a missionary, like Matteo Ricci, with a passion for friendship and the building of bridges that allow for intercultural sharing between the people of the Church in China and the Church in the United States.
Let us express our deep appreciation and on-going gratitude to this remarkable woman of faith and missionary zeal.
PRESENT AWARD
THANK YOU
BLESSING
